BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Two Vermont women are accused of embezzling $140,000 in federal funds intended to help the Abenaki Nation of Missisquoi.

WCAX-TV reports Thursday that Louise Larivee oversaw federal labor grants at the Abenaki Self Help Association in Swanton and Candy Thomas was a bookkeeper.

The federal indictment says the two conspired to steal money from 2013 to 2017.

Prosecutors say Thomas issued paychecks and cash payments to Larivee for her personal use and falsified expenses.

It was not immediately known if the two women are being represented by attorneys. A phone message was left with a federal public defender.
