On Wednesdays when most Hastings Public Schools students are getting off for an early afternoon of fun outside school, a group of more than 20 students is still sitting in a classroom at Hawthorne Elementary.
And they're there because they want to be.
Twenty-six fourth- and fifth-grade students are all part of a pilot after-school program called So Sew!
In the class, which started Feb. 27 and runs on Wednesdays when the district releases students early because of staff meetings, the students have learned a basic backstitch, how to sew on a button and even a little about cross-stitch.
"I just thought it would be fun and it is," fifth-grader Brooke Aspen said.
