A dog was shot by police early this morning after the animal attacked and scratched a boy in the 1700 block of West Eighth Street.
A 13-year-old boy was being dropped off at his grandmother's house. As the boy got out of his father's vehicle, a German shepherd attacked the boy and ran off. The boy suffered a scratch on his arm and his father called police at 7:58 a.m.
Officers responded and one found the described dog at Eighth Street and Jefferson Avenue, one block from Morton Elementary School. As he got out of his vehicle, the dog charged the officer. The officer pulled out his service weapon and shot the dog.
The injured dog was taken to TLC Vet Care for treatment. Because the injury broke the boy's skin, the dog will be monitored to see if it has rabies.
