Sara Naughton began doing hair on a life-size, Barbie mannequin when she was just 3 years old. She would twist the doll's fake blond locks into braids, twists and updos, adding bows and stickers for just the right touch.
She didn't anticipate that 15 years later, as a junior at Fort Calhoun High School, she would be doing the exact same activity and practicing skills that could someday help her secure a career.
"I have just always wanted to do this," she said. "I even did my friends' hair for prom this year."
Naughton and several dozen other high school and college students were presented with mannequin heads, ribbons, hair clips, curling irons and a variety of other tools and were instructed to create winning hair designs at the Nebraska SkillsUSA State Leadership and Skills Conference Friday at Central Community College-Hastings.
