Cigar bar planned for downtown Hastings

Downtown Hastings should soon have a bar where patrons can relax and unwind with fine liquor and choice tobacco.

Paul and Sandra Hamelink are planning to open Paul's Cigar Bar by late summer at 201 N. Lincoln Ave. The space, which was home most recently to Pacha Soap, is in the basement of a 131-year-old building at the northwest corner of Second Street and Lincoln Avenue that the Hamelinks own.

"It's a cool place," Paul Hamelink said. "It's got exposed brick and all the limestone stone work. It's really a neat space."
Pacha moved from the space, which Hamelink said is not quite 1,000 square feet, at the beginning of March to the first floor of the former Big G Ace building at 405 W. Second St. The soap company had been at 201 N. Lincoln Ave. since September 2012.

"It would've made a great coffee shop. Hastings doesn't need another coffee shop. It would've made a cool little bar like WineStyles is doing, but you can't compete with a bar if you don't serve food," said Hamelink, who is senior living administrator for Good Samaritan Village.

So it only made sense that Hamelink, who enjoys a fine cigar, open his own cigar bar to share with others.
