Mike Engelhardt of Kenesaw was left with a big pair of shoes to fill when asked to step in for his recently-deceased father on the Hastings Food Pantry board four years ago.
But it was a calling he simply could not turn down. The 57-year-old real estate agent at Hastings First Choice Realty now is serving his second year as board president and fourth on the board.
For Engelhardt, the role is one he had been rehearsing for in a sense since college. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1974, then went on to Midland Lutheran College in Fremont, where his volunteer work on campus included running the school's Muscular Dystrophy Dance Marathon four straight years and holding office as student senator.
