Whether it's playing dodge ball with high school students or helping them finish homework, John Roman has become a well-known face at The Zone.
The 21-year-old Colorado native and Hastings College junior has been helping with the after-school program for more than a year, after his academic adviser suggested he become part of the program. Roman gets paid for his involvement there through the AmeriCorps community service program.
"He's a wonderful mentor and great advocate," said Jennifer Lewis, executive director for YWCA Adams County, which oversees The Zone. "He's very open minded and community oriented. So, he brings a lot to the table for our program and for AmeriCorps for the service."
Spending a few hours each week at The Zone is a good fit for Roman, who is studying to become a physical education teacher. He likes interaction with the students.
