Authorities filed a manslaughter petition Thursday against a 9-year-old Hastings boy in the shooting death of his 4-year-old brother last week.
Adams County Attorney Donna Fegler Daiss confirmed the petition was filed in juvenile court, but the file is sealed by Nebraska law because it was filed as a mental health case.
The boy is not being identified due to his age.
Unlike a criminal case, an allegation in a juvenile petition can't lead to jail or prison. Instead, officials will propose the least restrictive method of altering the child's behavior.
While the boy has been taken into custody by the Adams County Probation Office, he has been placed with family, according to a motion filed by the boy's father Thursday.
