RED CLOUD — With a $300,000 government tourism grant coming their way, officials of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial and Educational Foundation are one big step closer to securing a productive and beneficial future for another historic downtown building here.
News of the award for redevelopment of the Moon Block was released Tuesday by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development, which administers the federal Community Development Block Grant program in the state.
The grant, which officially will be issued to the city of Red Cloud, was awarded in the tourism development category. CDBG funding comes to the states from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and is meant to promote development in small-town America.
The CDBG money would supplement an estimated $1.8 million raised through other grants and donations — including a $400,000 challenge grant from the Peter Kiewit Foundation and other assistance from USHUD — to "repurpose" the Moon Block, located on Webster Street next door to the Red Cloud Opera House.
