Jail hot topic in sheriff's race

A new jail was the main topic of discussion between the sheriff candidates Friday during a League of Women Voters forum at the YWCA of Adams County.

Sheriff candidate Ric Hallett of Hastings said the county needs to invest in a new jail facility.

Increases in the jail census over the last year-and-a-half have caused a growing number of prisoners to be housed in nearby facilities. That creates an additional expense for the county in transportation and housing costs.
