VFW closes the doors

Surrounded by a handful of daubers and stacks of cards, Shirley Murphy and Janet Scheidemann were ready for a Friday night of bingo at the Hastings Veterans of Foreign Wars Club.

The women, 88 and 80 years old, respectively, were part of the crowd gathered at the VFW to play bingo there for the last time.

"It's just going to be hard on a lot of people, especially me," Murphy said. "I'm used to going, going, going."

Although the charter — which was commissioned in July 1945 — will continue on, the club will close for good on May 2. VFW Post 1346 Mt. Suribachi had a home in downtown Hastings at the northeast corner of Third Street and St. Joseph Ave. before the current club at 1053 S. Wabash Ave. was constructed in 1963.
