Area tornado hardly noticed

On a day when severe tornados took lives and devastated neighborhoods in Arkansas and Oklahoma, Nebraskans appeared to dodge a bullet with the three tornados that reportedly touched down Sunday near Upland, Bradshaw, and Osceola.

Multiple reports of a tornado touching down in Upland Sunday afternoon were received by the National Weather Service near Hastings, including one from NWS senior meteorologist Jeremy Wesely. That tornado, which was photographed by Wesely, spent roughly three minutes on the ground, dissipating at 2:29 p.m.

So minimal was the apparent impact of the tornado that neither Franklin County Sheriff Jerry Archer nor area fire department officials were aware of it until the following morning, when they heard it reported on the morning news broadcast.
