The Hastings College men's tennis team is following a similar formula in it's quest to capture a third straight Great Plains Athletic Conference title: Schedule the hardest possible non-conference schedule so that team members are seasoned and ready for when conference play arrives.
The Broncos struggled against schools like NCAA Division I Creighton, Division II University of Nebraska at Omaha, University of Nebraska at Kearney, Colorado Mesa, Newman (Kan.), and Division III Grinnel (Iowa). They've also seen two of the better teams in the NAIA in McPherson (Kan.) and Bethany (Kan.). All those duals ended in a loss.
On Saturday at the HC Physical Fitness Facility tennis courts, those frustrating matches paid off for the Broncos (3-8) as they defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 6-3 to open the conference slate 1-0.
"When it comes to matches like (Nebraska Wesleyan), we've seen better and played against better," said fifth-year HC head coach Comron Yazdgerdi.
