On Sunday, the Hastings College baseball team accomplished something it hadn't done all season — it won back-to-back games.
After dropping the series opener to Morningside 6-0 Saturday at Duncan Field, the Broncos won three straight games, splitting the doubleheader with the Mustangs with a 5-4 win and sweeping Sunday's home doubleheader with Briar Cliff — 7-6 and 5-2.
Hastings improved its record to 9-21 overall and 5-7 in the GPAC with its three-game winning streak. Most importantly, the Broncos jumped to eighth in the conference standings. The GPAC tournament, which is to be played at Duncan Field May 2-4, takes only the top eight teams.
"We'd still like to get one more three-out-of-four weekend and get to .500 (in the conference). Obviously, we feel better with how we're playing and where we're at than we did 24 hours ago," Hastings College head coach Jim Boeve said following Sunday's sweep of Briar Cliff (7-25, 4-8). "Hopefully, we can have a decent weekend next week and go into the last week with a chance to make the tournament. With hosting, obviously we want to be in it."
