Hastings drops key doubleheader

With its postseason eligibility on the line, the Hastings College baseball team failed to score a run in a doubleheader Monday against Midland on Monday afternoon.

The Warriors (35-14, 14-2) swept the games 4-0 and 2-0 — two losses that the Broncos (12-22, 6-10), who sit seventh in the conference standings, could ill afford.

The GPAC postseason tournament field is cut to eight teams. Because Hastings swept Nebraska Wesleyan in a doubleheader last weekend, it owns a one-game lead as well as the tiebreaker over the eighth-place Prairie Wolves.

But the losses to second-place Midland are especially difficult, said HC head coach Steve Spongberg, whose team may have to rely on the help of some other schools to keep the Broncos in the postseason.

“This certainly didn’t help us. What we hope to do is keep our destiny in our own hands. I think we still have that opportunity, but by losing these two games today, it makes it much more difficult,” he said.
