Distance runners help Hawkettes finish on top

SUPERIOR — St. Cecilia girls track and field coach Alan VanCura knew his team was going to have to rely on its distance runners for points. And they did not disappoint.

The Hawkettes took the top three spots in both the 1,600-meter run and the 3,200, en route to a team victory at the Superior invite on Tuesday.

“It seemed like we were playing catch up all day, and we finally caught them when we went 1-2-3 in the 1,600,” VanCura said. “We don’t score a lot in the field events and Superior does, so we had to make up a lot of points on the track. Our girls did a great job. We had some nice times and the weather cooperated. Hopefully, we can keep improving.”

St. Cecilia won the meet with 142 points, beating second-place Superior by 18. Minden finished third with 96 points.
