The Hastings College baseball team has secured a spot in the GPAC tournament by splitting a doubleheader Thursday and reaping the benefits of two other teams that lost.
The Broncos won 3-2 in a tightly contested game two against Nebraska Wesleyan after falling 5-2 in opener. At the time, the HC players and coaches knew it was a big win, but as the night progressed, the GPAC standings revealed it to be a huge victory.
That because the two teams fighting the Broncos (12-25, 8-10 GPAC) for that eighth and final spot in the conference tournament, Briar Cliff (10-30, 6-12) and Concordia (12-25, 5-13), were both swept on same day. The Bulldogs now have no chance of catching the Broncos, and the best Briar Cliff can do is tie the Broncos. But HC owns the tiebreaker after defeating the Chargers twice.
It's possible there could be a three-way tie for sixth in the conference standings with Dakota Wesleyan and Midland, with one of the teams left out of the tournament, but head coach Jim Boeve said this morning it appears Hastings would not be that team under any scenario.
