Veterans memorial planned for KC Courthouse

A six-pillar veterans memorial is planned for the west side of
the Kearney County Courthouse in Minden, shown here. The
memorial is expected to be completed by Veterans Day 2015.

MINDEN — John Dorn wants to see a six-pillar memorial constructed on the west side of the Kearney County Courthouse as a recognition for all veterans.

Dorn, Sergeant of Arms for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5537 of Heartwell, is leading an effort among Kearney County veterans organizations to establish the memorial.

"We have a lot of memorials up for veterans that served during war time," he said. "What we're finding is there are veterans that served either during war time but not in the conflict or in the gaps between and there's nothing around to acknowledge them as veterans."

The proposed, five-foot wide black granite pillars would list the names of every possible veteran from Kearney County and those strong ties to the county. The plan is to dedicate the memorial on Veterans Day 2016.
