Man drowns in sewer lagoon after crashing car

RUSKIN — A rural Belvidere man drowned near here Sunday afternoon after his vehicle crashed into the Ruskin village sewer lagoon, Nuckolls County Attorney Timothy Schmidt reported.

The body of Donavon Holtzen, 44, was recovered from the water around 1:45 p.m. following the one-vehicle crash, which had occurred roughly 50 minutes earlier, Schmidt said.

According to a report from Nuckolls County Sheriff Jim Marr, Holtzen had been westbound on U.S. Highway 136 about 12:55 p.m. Sunday when for some reason he lost control of the Chrysler PT Cruiser he was driving and the vehicle ran off the road about one-half mile east of Ruskin.

The car ran through the north road ditch, crashed through a barbed-wire fence and then traveled down a slope into the water.

“I would say he traveled a couple hundred feet before the car crashed into the lagoon,” Schmidt said.
