About 30 opponents of the closing of Ninth Street through the Hastings College campus gathered Monday night at the Hastings Public Library to launch a petition drive that they hope results in keeping the street open.
The Keep 9th Street Open committee formed after the Hastings City Council voted unanimously July 14 to close the street as requested by the college. Hastings College President Don Jackson said the college is looking to grow and the closing of Ninth Street should help make the college more attractive to prospective students in the future.
Under the college's proposal, the street would not close until June 2015 at the earliest.
The Keep 9th Street Open group hopes to put the matter of closing the street up for a vote in a special election next spring. To do so, petitioners will need to gather more than 3,000 signatures of the city's registered voters.
