Petition group starting to take names

Organizers of a petition to prevent the closing of a portion of Ninth Street say they collected just more than 200 signatures during Kool-Aid Days this weekend.

"We had two tables, one at each end of the celebration. Things went well," said Lenie Wilson, who lives in the 800 block of Fourth Avenue near Ninth Street and is leading the petition effort along with her husband, Larry.

The group needs to gather about 3,000 signatures of registered voters on the petitions before the matter can be placed on the ballot.

About 20 residents showed up Wednesday at the Hastings Public Library for the second meeting of the Keep 9th Street Open group that is opposed to the closing of Ninth Street through the Hastings College campus. The group held an organizational meeting Aug. 4.
