Police take long view of crime stats

Last year saw a spike in some crimes in Hastings, but police don't believe its any cause for alarm.

Earlier this week, the Hastings Police Department released its statistics for crimes reported in the city during 2012.

Several crime categories showed an increase over totals in 2011 while others dropped.

There was an increase in forcible rape, burglary, robbery and vehicle thefts. But assaults, larceny and arson all dropped. The total offense rate per thousand increased from 36.9 in 2011 to 38.9 in 2012.

While changes in a single year may be alarming, Sgt. Steve Murphy said officers tend to look at the numbers of reports over a period of time.
