Cow plane crowd pleaser at fun fly

Gia Norman wears his scared face while flying at Skylark
Field Saturday afternoon. The plane has a wingspan of 84
inches and weighs about 17 pounds.

It's a bird. It's a plane. It's a flying cow?

One of the most talked about planes at model airplane shows across the country, including the fun fly event near Hastings Saturday, is Gia Norman, a plane made to look like a cow.

"He won best new airplane of 2014 at an event in Georgia. Then I took it to Michigan three weeks ago and it won best night flier," said creator and pilot Laine Stahr. "He's winning awards everywhere he goes."

Norman, the flying cow, was one of dozens of planes on display and in the air during the Hastings Skylarks Fun Fly at Skylark Field in the old U.S. Naval Ammunition Depot southeast of Hastings Saturday.

A fun fly is an event hosted by a model airplane club where enthusiasts from across the state are encouraged to come for a day of socializing and flying.
