Every school day Ann Mays tries to share her passion for history with her students in hopes that they will find their own passion.
“But I’ve found it’s really tough to inspire kids,” Mays said recently. “I’ve found kids are most inspired by their own success.”
In an effort to find that passion and inspire her students, Mays requires her junior level American History students at Hastings High to create a project for the National History Day competition.
“Basically, the goal of it is to get them involved in research at a higher level than what is normally expected in a classroom,” Mays said. “So that’s why I started doing it.”
Earlier this summer, Mays was named as the Patricia Behring Teacher of the Year Award recipient for the Nebraska high school division for her involvement in National History Day.
