The cast of Hastings Community Theatre will go mostly green in its forthcoming production: “Shrek the Musical,” opening at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday and repeating on Aug. 29-31 at the Masonic Center Theatre, 411 N. Hastings Ave.

Based on the popular 2001 animated movie, the production features more than 50 characters on-stage — including several donning ogre green makeup — in what stage director Donna Hastings describes as a major production with something for viewers of all ages. Featuring lavish costuming, colorful characters and sets, and full orchestral accompaniment, the telling of this favorite animated tale will transport audience members on a fairy tale journey of epic proportions.

“There’s singing, there’s dancing, some tap dancing … a little bit of everything in the show,” Hastings said. “There are just so many people who are so good in this show that I hesitate to single anyone out. It’s perfect to bring your family and just sit and enjoy a couple hours of entertainment.”

With cast and crew members hailing from Hastings, Blue Hill, Harvard, Clay Center and Sutton, the production “is truly a community musical,” Hastings said. “I’m really happy with how this is coming along and the talent that we have.”
