Distant cousins inspire each other to run

Lanay and Neil Grothen are pictured after completing the
Kool-Aid Days 5K race August 11 at Lake Hastings. Both
individuals placed first in their age divisions and Lanay was
the first woman to cross the finish line. Neil encouraged
Lanay, his second cousin, to start running races while at a
family wedding earlier this summer.

Neil and Lanay Grothen both love the rush of running — adrenaline pumping, heartbeat quickening, limbs loosening.

Lanay, 13, has experienced these feelings many times this spring and summer while running on the field roads near her family's farm just outside of Hastings.

Neil, 72, discovered his affinity for running five years ago when he was looking for a hobby to pursue after retirement. Now, he has worked his way into a regular routine. He has competed in 19 races this summer alone.

The pair both felt the familiar rush in their lungs and ache in their ankles during the Kool-Aid Days 5k run Aug. 11, where they both placed first in their age divisions, and Lanay was the first female overall to cross the finish line.
