From Russia with love

Longfellow Elementary principal Irina Erickson greets

Monday morning outside the school.

There may be 350 students wandering the halls of Longfellow Elementary each day, but that won’t stop new principal Irina Erickson from getting to know each of them by name.

“I hope that I will learn their names very quickly. I am going to work on that. There are a lot of students to learn, but I’m going to try to do it as fast as I can,” Erickson said Aug. 15.

Erickson, who speaks with a bit of an accent, first came to the United States from her native Russia in 1996 and has been teaching in Grand Island Public Schools for the last 12 years.

However, Hastings was her first home in the U.S. and the place where she, her husband, Brett, and their two children, Keira, 7 and Ian, 2, live today.
