Learning the ropes

Monte McIntyre of Hastings teaches fourth-graders about
the tie down roping event they will see during the Oregon
Trail Rodeo during a field trip to the Adams County
Fairgrounds Friday morning.

Standing tall in cowboy boots, jeans and a western shirt, Troy Heinert looked down at the students from under his cowboy hat.

"I'm one of the pickup men here at the rodeo, meaning I'm one of the guys who gets the guys off the horses," he said. "But I used to be a bareback rider when I was young."

Heinert, who currently lives in Mission, S.D., was one of numerous cowboys to share tales of rodeo life and facts about rodeo events with area fourth-graders Friday at the Adams County Fairgrounds.
