Faces of Tribland: Naomi Thiel

Naomi Thiel of Hastings is shown in a March 27, 1967, file photo after
hitting a hole-in-one at the Southern Hills Golf Course. Thiel reportedly
was the first woman to accomplish the feat at Southern Hills.

Health problems have forced the first woman to ever hit a hole-in-one on the Southern Hills golf course to give up the sport of golf.

Naomi Thiel of Hastings was playing golf with her son, John, on a Sunday on March 26, 1967. They were on the sixth hole when Thiel pulled out a nine iron for her tee shot on the 90-yard, par three hole.

“The ball hit the green and then rolled toward the hole like it had eyes,” Thiel said at the time. A photo of the feat appeared the next day in the Hastings Tribune, stating that it was the first time a woman aced a hole at Southern Hills.

Thiel, who is nearing her 80th birthday, enjoyed playing golf for 52 years but had to give it up because “I have some back issues now,” she said.
