Sitting on a bench in the hallway, 13-year-old Garrett Engel quietly hums “My Country ’Tis of Thee” as he waits.
After a few minutes, he starts whistling scales as one child leaves the room across the hall and another enters.
“What number were you?” he asks another student as he looks at the 15 on the corner of his paper.
Finally, it’s Garrett’s turn and he rises to enter the small room.
Inside, Garrett sings the song again, this time louder along with performing his scales.
Leaving the room a few minutes later, Garrett wears a smile proudly announcing he’s an alto this year.
Garrett was one of several dozen fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students from across south-central Nebraska who took part in the returning performer auditions for the South Central Nebraska Children’s Chorale Tuesday at Hastings College.
