Board receives bids on potential new route

A new thruway connecting motorists from north U.S. Highway 281 to east Hastings via 42nd Street and Showboat Boulevard is a long-debated city and county project that could be completed by this time next year, pending further action by the Adams County Board of Supervisors.

The plan under consideration, which resembles ideas discussed by city and county officials throughout the past several decades, would pave 42nd Street between Highway 281 and Showboat Boulevard and then one mile south from 42nd Street to 26th Street. The new roadway would connect North Highway 281 to Showboat, creating an alternative route for car and truck traffic headed to businesses east of town.

The county board met for a work session Wednesday afternoon to receive bids from contractors on the milling and paving of the project, which is slated to be completed between March 1 and Sept. 1 next year.
