Local talent key for Tigers

Doane College's Matt Franzen speaks at GPAC media days August 7 in
Lincoln.

Doane College was voted to finish fifth in the coaches poll and sixth in the media poll after the GPAC media day on Aug. 7 in Lincoln, but as the Tigers’ head coach Matt Franzen knows, it’s hard to know in August how a team will finish the season.

“Last year, going into the season, I was really excited. I thought it could be the best team we’ve had yet. But by the end of the season, things had kind of unraveled,” Franzen said. “You never know for sure.”

Doane returns seven starters on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Tigers will look to a pair of Tribland players to lead the team this season.

St. Cecilia graduate Phil Hamburger returns to the quarterback position this season after throwing for 667 yards and six touchdowns and running for 225 yards and two scores in just six games last season.
