Applicants needed for Goodfellows program

Each year, the Hastings Tribune's Goodfellows program serves hundreds of families in need. The key is finding those families.

Goodfellows is currently seeking applications from needy families.

"We serve about 200 families each year," said Linda Swayze, one of the program's coordinators. "We try to serve as many families as we possibly can."

Families who are accepted into the program each receive boxes with food and toys for any chidlren in the family. The specific contents of each applicant's box are based on the individual applicant.

Applicants are asked to provide information on family demographics, including the number of people in the family, whether the family has children and the ages and gender of the children.

"That's how we tailor the boxes to each family," Swayze said.

The boxes given to families provide food for about a week and toys for the children.

"We try to make sure the toys we give fit that family," Swayze said.

The program collects toys for children up to 10 years old.

Goodfellows applications can be picked up at either the Hastings Tribune or the Nebraska Health and Human Services office in Hastings. They must be returned to either location by Dec. 12.
