Nativity scene exhibit helps inspire ‘true spirit of Christmas’

Mary and Joseph, shepherds and sheep, wise men bearing gifts and the baby Jesus in more than 100 different forms were on display at a Hastings church this weekend to kick off the Advent season.

First United Methodist Church hosted the “O Holy Night” Nativity scene extravaganza for the public, with nearly 150 different Nativity sets of all shapes, sizes and designs on display.

Church member Mary Jo Heishman had suggested the idea about a year and a half ago after seeing a similar display at a church in Des Moines, Iowa.

“It’s a great way to start the Advent season because it’s usually Santa Claus and the commercial and all that, so we wanted to do this to have the focus on the birth of the baby Jesus,” Heishman said.

So through the month of November, members of the church were asked to bring in their favorite Nativity sets, all of which were set up and put on display within the last week.
