Pete Kortum received a warm reception Monday on his first day as Hastings' new police chief.
In the 30 seconds it took to walk from his car to the City Building, two motorists rolled down car windows and welcomed him as chief. Earlier in the morning, three others had greeted him when he purchased coffee.
"Everybody has been great," said Kortum, who replaces Larry Thoren after he retired in August.
Kortum started his day at 5:30 in the morning and introduced himself to uniformed officers during a staff meeting. Some officers he had previously met, but this allowed him to make introductions to every officer.
