Like a lump of coal in a Christmas stocking, property tax statements have been landing in Adams County mailboxes over the last week.
About 91 percent of each Hastings taxpayer’s bill is divided among the Hastings Public School District, the city of Hastings and Adams County.
Taxes are assessed to property owners by multiplying the tax levy rate for each taxing authority times the property’s valuation.
The total levy for most Hastings residents is $2.34 for every $100 of valuation, or $2,341 on a $100,000 property. That’s down from $2,357 last year.
That number can change for other Hastings and Adams County residents depending on their township levy, their school district, which natural resources district they are in and other factors.
