In the spirit of the season

Kaylee Juranek, 4, adds a piece of tape as she wraps a gift
she chose while shopping at Kmart Saturday morning.

Jaymee Durre browsed the aisles at Kmart on Saturday morning with a gift mission.
She selected decorations for her mom, toys for her sisters and even some art supplies for herself. But she also went a step further, wanting to spend her money in a way that would honor a family member who died this year.

She and Mike Howie, a member of the Hastings Kiwanis Club who helped Durre select and wrap her purchases, found a gift that fit the bill perfectly — a delicate, gold angel ornament that will honor the memory of Jaymee's grandma.

"My grandma always gave me the things that I wanted, so I wanted to do something special for her, and for my mom," the 9-year-old said. "Angels help us remember her."

Every Christmas season, the Hastings Kiwanis Club joins the Salvation Army and Hastings Kmart, 3001 W. 12th Street, to host a shopping spree for families that need assistance buying holiday gifts.
