RED CLOUD — A handful of Willa Cather enthusiasts celebrated the famous author’s birthday here Saturday afternoon in a manner similar to what Cather herself may have done.

The Willa Cather Foundation played host to an afternoon tea both Saturday and Sunday at the Cather Second Home. Friday would have been the author’s 139th birthday.

Tracy Tucker, education director for the foundation, said the decision was made to celebrate the date with an activity that was more Cather-inspired rather than something directly related, like a reading.

Tucker said for interviews Cather often would invite the reporter to tea. Tucker read an account of one such encounter the reporter described as a bust.
“The reporter was talking about how she was such a wonderful conversationalist that the tea never got consumed really well because they were too busy having a great conversation,” Tucker said.
