Council takes strides toward marathon

After expressing unanimous positive support for an event that could provide Hastings with a boost in tourism and statewide exposure, the Hastings City Council took an initial step toward making a proposed marathon a reality for the city next summer.

At a work session in September, the Hastings City Council heard a request from Ron Alexander to add a marathon to the Healthy Hastings Run For Your Life event, which drew more than 300 runners to its inaugural 5k, 10k and half-marathon races this summer.

At its regular meeting Monday, the council approved an application requesting consent from the Nebraska Department of Roads to close U.S. Highway 281 for several hours on the morning of the proposed marathon race, which effectively moves the marathon proposal one step closer to reality.
