Attendance policy concerns discussed at HPS board meeting

Following a presentation from Bert Peterson, the grandfather of Hastings Public Schools students who struggle with asthma, the school district will review its attendance policy.

Peterson shared his concerns about the current attendance policy Thursday evening during the HPS Board of Education's December work session.

Superintendent Craig Kautz said a policy revision like this would need to include input from the county attorney's office, other administrators and the district's legal council. He said the district is going to review the attendance policy with the concerns of Peterson and other parents in mind and try to generate a policy all parties can support.

"All I can say is I'll do my part," he said. "My part will be to have listened, a lot, and to really take to heart and take seriously the consideration here and the revisions that could take place. I think we owe that to every single one of our patrons."
