Through efforts such as Hastings Utilities' economic development funding program, a lot of work has been done in Hastings to strengthen the business community here.
That was the message Dave Rippe, executive director for Hastings Economic Development Corporation, had during the HEDC 39th annual meeting Wednesday at the Hastings Convention Center.
One of the first things Rippe mentioned was the HU program, of which Thermo King was the first to take advantage of in December 2011. The Board of Public Works approved $600,000 for Thermo King Corp. in exchange for the company's promise to add 96 jobs.
"They've actually surpassed that and I think there are now over 130 full-time jobs they brought in," Rippe said. "They brought in a lot of high-paid salary positions, like engineers they recruited from around the world. It is a neat deal for our community and it was really incumbent upon our city to support investments like that."
