Eighth-graders spread holiday cheer

Eighth-grader Kaleb Ballheim sings with the Hastings Middle
School Eighth Notes at the Homestead Thursday morning.

"Dashing through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh …"

"Roasting chestnuts by an open fire …"

Listening to a group of eighth-graders sing Christmas carols can put almost anyone in the mood for the holidays.

And that was part of the goal for the Eighth Notes, a select group of eighth-graders from Hastings Middle School who sang at three senior residence homes Thursday.

"We do this every year," said choral director Kristen Janda. "I think this is the fourth year we've done it. We just go around and spread some holiday cheer throughout the community."

The 26 students started their morning at Homestead, 1116 Sycamore Ave., where they sang the five songs they had performed earlier in the week at their winter concert.
