YORK — Despite a recommendation to the contrary from a key committee, irrigators in the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District will be required to install flow meters on all their high-capacity wells by January 2016 if not sooner.
Meeting in York Thursday afternoon, the district's full board of directors voted 10-6 to OK the metering requirement as part of a larger slate of changes to Rule 5 of the NRD's groundwater management rules and regulations. The overall slate won final approval by a vote of 12-3, with one member not voting.
The metering requirement applies to the district's Groundwater Management Area No. 1, which encompasses the entire district minus some land southwest of Milligan and tracts east of the Big Blue River in Butler, Seward and Saline counties. The UBBNRD encompasses all of York County, almost all of Hamilton County, and portions of Adams, Clay, Fillmore, Saline, Seward, Butler and Polk counties, with headquarters in York.
