City crews chip away at streets

Road crews have their work cut out for them as they try to clear streets in Hastings.

Hastings Street Superintendent Richard Douglas said this morning that the city has sanders out as well as crews working on widening areas of U.S. Highway 6 where four lanes of traffic have been squished.

"The streets are very icy yet and will be until we can get ahead of it or the weather cooperates," he said. "We'll keep chipping away at it. We feel we have to try."

Street crews also are attempting to break up iced-over intersections. Douglas said it's difficult to cut through the ice, leaving crews to shave off the topmost layer.
