— Figures released showed that enrollment at Hastings College dropped by 6.7 percent this school year, from 1,146 in 2011 to 1,069 in 2012. College president Dennis Trotter cited concern over student debt as a contributor to the problem.
— Drought damage prompted many Tribland farmers to begin harvest a few weeks early.
— A collision between a school bus and semitrailer on a rural Webster County road killed four people and injured five. Those killed were semi driver Travis Witte, 21, of Blue Hill; bus driver Marla Wentworth, 59, of Red Cloud; and student passengers Dustin Tesdahl, 18, and Caroline Thallman, 10, both of Blue Hill.
