For the second straight game, defense led the Class C-2 No. 7 St. Cecilia girls basketball team to a victory.
The Hawkettes improved to 2-0 after winning their home opener 52-35 over Bishop Neumann Saturday at Chapman Gymnasium. STC head coach Jahn Kile said slowing down the Cavaliers was a top priority.
“Our defense is playing very well. We held them to 35 points after they scored 65 on Thursday. That’s what we want to do each night is play defense,” Kile said.
The St. Cecilia defense held Neumann to just 11-of-48 shooting (23 percent) from the field. The Hawkettes allowed only two Cavalier players to score more than three points.
STC’s main focus on defense was Bishop Neumann sophomore Hailey Thiele. Kile said she’s quick off the dribble and has the green light from her coaches at all times. Thiele finished with 19 points on 6-of-17 shooting, 11 of which came in the first half.
