The Adams Central wrestling team got off to a rocky start in its first dual of the season, but more than made up for it by night's end.
The Patriots dropped four of the first six matches Tuesday against Holdrege at Adams Central, but won six of the last eight on the way to a 42-33 victory over the Dusters.
"It was a good team effort," AC head coach Dan Lonowski said. "It's good to get to 1-0 before we get to 0-1."
With the dual starting with the 182-pounders, Lonowski said the middleweights came through when the Patriots needed it most.
Perhaps the marquee matchup of the night was at 138 pounds, where Adams Central's Tyler Joseph took on Holdrege's Jacob Pfeifer. Both wrestlers were state qualifiers last season and both are expected to be among the top wrestlers in Class B this season.
The two wrestlers were tied at the end of the first period, but Joseph took a 4-2 lead in the second period on a reversal. Joseph knows he's a strong wrestler when on the ground, so he was confident starting the third period in the down position. Joseph added another reversal in the third and took the match 6-2.
