Hawkettes cruise to opening win

St. Cecilia's Shandra Farmer shoots against Columbus Scotus'
Kelsey Kessler Thursday in Hastings.

St. Cecilia head girls basketball coach Jahn Kile had some concern going into his team's season opener at home with Columbus Scotus.

There are many faces back from last season's state runner-up squad, but Thursday's game with the Shamrocks marked the debut for a pair of new starters in juniors Karlee Wright and Melody O'Callaghan. The coach admitted he wasn't sure how well the five starters would gel together.

Those concerns were squashed right away, as the Class C-2 No. 6 Hawkettes (1-0) showed complete control in a 54-25 win.
"We played hard and played well on both ends of the floor. You really saw those starting girls play real comfortable," Kile said.
