Superior's Makayla Utecht tries to pass while colliding with
Blue Hill's Katie Schaefer Thursday in Superior.
SUPERIOR — After the Class C-2 No. 10 Blue Hill girls basketball team jumped to an 8-3 lead and held Superior to just one field goal in the first quarter of Thursday’s game, it seemed as though the Bobcats were going to cruise to their third straight win.
But starting the season 3-0 was anything but easy for Blue Hill.
The Bobcats led Superior 39-34 with just 30 seconds remaining, until Superior’s Holly Bower, a senior, brought the Wildcats within three points. Teammate Riley Butler made one of two free throws to cut the Blue Hill lead to 39-37.
After Blue Hill’s Lexie Himmelberg added a free throw with 10 seconds remaining, Superior has one last shot to tie the game. Butler, who had hit three 3-pointers already, attempted the game-tying three, but it was no good. Bower rebounded the ball under the basket and got the putback, but it was all for naught. The Bobcats escaped with a 40-39 victory.
