At the risk of being too obvious, the key for the preseason Class C-2 No. 7 St. Cecilia girls basketball team Tuesday night was simply putting the ball in the hoop.
The Hawkettes had just a 14-13 lead over Wood River at the end of the first quarter after shooting 6-of-16 from the field. But STC dominated the rest of the game thanks to 57-percent shooting (21-of-37) over the final three quarters en route to a 64-39 victory Tuesday at Chapman Gymnasium.
St. Cecilia head coach Jahn Kile, whose team has won five straight games to open the season, said his team had the looks in the first quarter but just couldn’t convert.
“We executed some nice things in the first half, but we missed some shots and layups,” Kile said. “We talked at halftime that we need to execute the plays right, run our offense and then finish with a good shot and make the thing and make them pay.”
